Behind Dan Cooney

I’m Dan Cooney and I’m from Long Island, New York.

As a creative it’s often hard to label yourself as one thing – what all do you create?

I like to make music where I try to combine a bunch of different styles and inspirations that I have.

This includes indie music, emo rap music, lofi music, there are lots of different styles I enjoy and try to combine when making music, this way everyone can come together and enjoy the same sounds as one.

When did you start?

I thought of the idea of creating music in late 2018 when I was introduced to music by Kid Cudi, A$AP Rocky, Rat Boy, and Mac Miller.

These artists inspired me to start creating my own music and I release my first song in January of 2019. I have been creating and releasing music since then, and look to learn more to further better my sounds.

What’s your unique style?

I try to blend styles of indie, emo rap, lofi, post-hardcore, and more all into one.

Whether I have achieved that I will leave it up to those who listen to my music, but with that approach I always find myself happy with how my songs come out, because it can be different every time.

You had streams in 83 countries this year- how did it feel to see something that crazy?

It felt really good to see that a large amount of people from around the world are enjoying my music. It’s a great feeling to have people enjoying your music and I hope it makes them feel good in return to have the music.

You just dropped “Going nowhere”

How long did it take to create the track?

I had the lyrics written for a while, and applied to a beat I received from my good friend Prod. Focus Jordan (big up to him, he is a phenomenal talent and human being).

I held on to the beat for a little while and then this past summer I went to my friend Gianni Gambuzza (another good friend of mine and phenomenal talent) and asked him for help with the recording and mixing as my setup at the time wasn’t great and was super happy with how it came out and released the track this past December.

What’s the reaction been like?

The reaction has been pretty good so far. It has been doing well on Spotify so I’m happy about that.

I’m grateful people are enjoying the music I’m creating, and that they have something for them to enjoy and hopefully relate to and help them get through tough times.

What’s your favorite part of the song?

I love the end part where, if you listen closely, I begin screaming the adlibs.

For me it gives a real cool post hardcore vibe, which is something I wanted to include in my music for a while.

Did you do anything dope for the rollout?

I did! We ran a contest  where whoever presaved the track I picked one random presaver and they won some free merch.

Any projects recent or future you’re excited about?

I hope to release my first EP later this year. I will play it by ear as the year goes on, but definitely expect new music.

What are some of your inspirations in creation or life in general?

Definitely experiences I’ve gone through.

I think about many things in my life that have gone left unforgiven and just things that have left a bad taste in my mouth, but  it’s ironically a gift, as I’ve been able to incorporate those feelings into my music.

I hope to inspire listeners to be the best version of them and to understand that we are all in this life together.

What’s something you’d go back & tell yourself at the start of it all?

Remember to have fun and approach everything with a smile.

I still try and remind myself this, as it’s much easier said than done, but it makes life so much easier.
