How has the reaction to your project been so far?
It has been great to say the least, I’m just glad everyone got an opportunity to see me in my zone and in my best form and I’m glad that I got an opportunity to share it with everyone. From keeping the momentum going after the release by dropping more music to performing live, it has been an amazing experience.
How long did it take to make your project from start to finish, recording-wise?
I started recording ‘2020’ about late November of 2019 and finished everything in late December 2019, so you can say just about a month. It honestly doesn’t take me that long to record as much as I aim for perfection, it always seems to work in my favor.
What kind of ‘sound’, production wise, did you have in your mind, prior to entering the studio?
I went through a wide range of choices personally, but I didn’t want it to be experimental like my last album so I wanted it to replicate what was going on in my head at the time because there were moments where i was in a dark place mentally so I wanted my Metal music for the most part to replicate that “dark” place. As for the rap I wanted something more upbeat/uptempo, a similar but more different feel than I’ve had before in my music.
What kind of input did the producer have during the process
And are you pleased with the final outcome? (sound – production wise)
There wasn’t much input from them as I just got in there and let my confidence and my skill do the talking and everything went smoothly from that point.
Did the producer / (you) use any (weird) experimental mixing and/or recording techniques?
Yeah this time around we wanted to have some reverb effects for my vocals in some tracks like “HANG THE FAMILY” and “NYMPHOMANIAC” for example, just to give those tracks the futuristic vibe that most of the album gave off.
Please inform us about your favourite songs and lyrical highlights and why?
There’s so many favorites but I’ll narrow it down to four. As for the Metal, it’s “ABANDONED” and “NYMPHOMANIAC” by far. Now for the Rap, it’s “PRIME TIME” and “DREAMING/DON’T WAKE ME”. Those are my favorites simply because those were sound-wise my highlight tracks for this project right with “PRIME TIME”. Those songs really helped shape the album to its fullest. For me, “DREAMING/DON’T WAKE ME” is a personal favorite because that was the first time I experimented with having two different songs in one track and I enjoyed recording them as well.
Any overall theme of mood that you’re trying to capture with the project?
The theme that I was trying to capture for this was more of a dark but upbeat theme and an extremely bi-polar mood as well. To touch more on the mood, I wanted a back and forth mood switch throughout the album to symbolize what was going through my head during the recording process.
Does your vision for coming up with music get affected at all by time?
Not at all honestly. Music runs through my blood 24/7 and it is very hard for me to run out of ideas. For example, I already have a vivid idea for the next project so that just speaks for itself.
Are there any ‘crazy’ behind the scenes stories from these sessions that you can share with us?
I’m not really comfortable with sharing this one but f–k it. Like I mentioned before, during the recording of all this I was in a dark place and during the “NO GOD” recording session, I let myself go emotionally. I literally burst into tears mid-recording but we kept it going because this was what we wanted. We wanted to capture every feeling that I felt with no fabrication, I wanted to stay true to who I was and what I was dealing with and it all fit perfectly with that track also. Music is art, and I feel like in order to capture true art, you need to have real feelings replicated in your art to perfect your finished product.
How would you describe the sound of your tape to any potential new fan?
This sound within this album and all of my music is something very unique and different from anything else that is being put out there, so buckle up and enjoy because it is going to be a long ride.
Who are your influences and heroes? (music-wise)
My major influences have been and always will be Drake and Eminem. Since ‘07 I have grown up understanding and listening to Drake and I feel like the things he has gone through prior to fame relates to me so much. If it isn’t family, it’s the creative gene that he has always had and we both share that trait very well. Now Eminem, he has always been that guy with no filter and someone who has always been themselves without caring about the outside noise and that replicates who I am as a person. I can careless about what anyone has to say about me or what I do because in truth, if you focus too much on what others have to say, you would lose yourself trying to be someone you’re not.
If there’s anything you’d like to add, say, please do:
I know I have mentioned a lot about being in a “dark place”, but for anyone out there dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, please do everything in your power to better yourself. Get help, find something that you enjoy to keep you occupied, try new things, be a better person than you were yesterday because there is always an outlet, even when it seems like there’s no way out, it’s the path to getting better that will make everything better in the end.
